Kalimpong — day trips and nearby villages

Practical routes from Kalimpong town for day trips to Lava, Rishyap, Pedong, and border-adjacent areas, with timing notes and what to expect on each route.

Full guide

Kalimpong town is a practical base for accessing a cluster of nearby villages and viewpoints, most reachable in under two hours by shared jeep or private hire.

Lava is the most visited day trip from Kalimpong. The shared jeep from Mela Ground takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours and costs a fraction of a private hire. Lava itself is small — the Neora Valley National Park entry point, the monastery, and the viewpoint are all within walking distance. If you plan to stay overnight, accommodation in Lava is limited and books out during season. Rishyap is a further 14 km from Lava and requires a separate jeep or hire from there.

Pedong is southeast of Kalimpong, roughly 12 km on a winding road. It has a mix of old heritage buildings and a calmer feel than Kalimpong town. The Kali Mandir and the old bungalow views are the main draws. A shared jeep from Kalimpong goes in the mornings; the return timing is less reliable in the afternoon.

Delo Hill and its park are within Kalimpong town limits — a short drive or a 30-minute walk uphill from the main market. Good views toward the Teesta on a clear day. The park charges a small entry fee and closes in the evening.

The Durpin Hill area has the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang monastery, a well-maintained complex with an elevated platform view over the Teesta valley. Most visitors combine this with a walk around Durpin Danda.

Toward the Bhutan border, Jaigaon and Phuntsholing are accessible from Alipurduar (around 3.5 hours from Kalimpong) rather than directly from Kalimpong town. If you are planning a Bhutan-side excursion, it makes more logistical sense as a separate leg from the Siliguri-Alipurduar side.

For all day trips, an early start is worth it. Hill roads get more traffic from mid-morning, and cloud cover often increases from noon. If you are driving yourself, check the road condition after any overnight rain before heading to Lava or Rishyap.
